Point au Fer Hydrologic Restoration Project
Point au Fer Hydrologic Restoration Project
Point au Fer Island is located in western Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. The restoration project is divided into two locations in saline and brackish marshes on the southeastern and southwestern portions of the islands. Seven canal plugs were constructed in the pipeline canals between Mosquito Bay and Bay Castagnier and in the north-south pipeline canal between Mosquito Bayou and the Gulf of Mexico in November 1995. Four plugs were constructed in the east-to west canal linking Mosquito Bay and Bay Castagnier to restore historic water flows across the island. In addition to the construction of the plugs, riprap was placed along a 3600-foot long stretch of shoreline to slow shoreline erosion and prevent breaching by the Gulf of Mexico. The construction phase of this project was completed in May 1997.
