"Quivett Creek is a Cape Cod marsh located on the border of the towns of Dennis and Brewster. An abandoned road, Sea Street, bisects the marsh. Recent field observations recorded a restriction in tidal flow to the upgradient marsh during high tide cycles because an outdated culvert prevents adequate salt-water exchange in the marsh. The side of the marsh that is most affected by the restriction is about 10 acres in size and is dominated by Phragmites australis. In addition to native flora, Quivett Creek also supports a small run of anadromous alewives, which spawn in a small upstream pond. The goal of the restoration project at Quivett Creek marsh is to improve fisheries and wildlife habitat by restoring as much tidal flow to the salt marsh as possible without causing upstream flooding of low-lying structures. The restoration will also enhance fish passage and potentially reduce invasive colonization of Phragmites. The project will consist of replacing the culverts beneath the abandoned roadbed with a larger culvert designed to provide enhanced tidal flushing to the upgradient marsh. Project construction is targeted for the fall of 2002.
