Myrtle Grove Freshwater Project
Myrtle Grove Freshwater Project
Myrtle Grove Siphon The Delta-building Diversion at Myrtle Grove was originally conceived as a siphon project similar to the Naomi Freshwater Diversion Project with project administration by NOAA Fisheries. This project area spans Plaquemines, Jefferson, and Lafourche Parishes in the fresh to brackish marshes roughly between Bayou Lafourche to the west, the Mississippi River to the east, and the town of Lafitte to the north. During the engineering and design phase of the project, it was determined that much greater benefits to the marsh and other living resources could be achieved by designing a project that would allow greater flows into the project area. As it is currently conceived, the project would involve installation of five 16' by 16' gated box culverts on the right descending bank of the Mississippi River in the vicinity of Myrtle Grove, resulting in a maximum conveyance capacity of 15,000 cfs of the Mississippi River into the project area. The project is designed with a reversed-curve inflow channel to maximize sediment capture. Given the scope and magnitude of the project, NMFS has transferred overall project administration to the while maintaining lead on fisheries modeling and monitoring of the project.
